Every year around this time I usually post an update on my past year in the game. Sadly, I haven't done all that damn much the last 12 months. XD

Aside from starting a chocobo in May, I joined an endgame linkshell (LS) earlier this year to do events a couple times a week for 2-3 hours. Also I somehow caught the attention of Blaive and deemed worthy of being his duo partner. How is beyond me! He's amazing at it and I'm really just okay. So I'll dedicate this post to those two topics.

My first time fighting Jailer of Love in sea! Was easier than I expected!

Another Ix'mnk run and Janeiro noticed the etchings above the doorways look a lot like a penis~ Really, I think the japanese have a thing for phallic symbols.. note Jan's comment to Blaive is about actual monsters.

The first BLM (Black Mage) cape to drop from the set of 9 pop items farmed for Ix'mnk. I have magical defeat drop skills, you'll see.

A week later, my magical skills kick in again! My defeats + Jan's treasure hunter = win.

I won lots on the second drop!! (I still think it should have gone to Blaive though.) Here's a shot of my new cape!

We fough Proto-Ultima and it went really well, although along with a few of us Spenny died. (Nothing new!) Apparently Blaive thinks it is okay to sit on dead midgets.

Back in May I got this strange urge to raise a chocobo in FFXI. The ability has been in for a long time now, but I never had an interest in it prior. It was an impulsive decision spawned by seeing two chococards for a black male and red female. Not knowing a damn thing about this activity in the game, I bought the cards from the owner for a total of 10k in game money and searched about the internet on how to use the cards to mate the chocobos for an egg. First attempt succeeded! Now I spend about 15 min a day caring for the bird, which really isn't as time or money intensive as I expected the hobby to be. Now behold the cuteness of ~~Heldin Uranus~~ Crimson Avenger!

My goal with her was to raise her as a digger and not a racer and so far she's been doing really well on that path. It's a nice little break every day to play with her.

Antidepressants May Thwart Quest for True Love

Antidepressant drugs, already known to cause sexual side effects, may also suppress the basic human emotions of love and romance.

That SSRIs, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — the most common type of antidepressant — cause sexual dysfunction is common knowledge. Of the 31 million adults in the United States who take the SSRIs, about 30 percent are believed to experience sexual dysfunction.

But a new theory suggests that SSRI antidepressants may also subtly alter the fundamental chemistry of love and romance, snuffing the first sparks between two people otherwise destined to become lovers, and preventing couples from bonding.

"There's every reason to think SSRIs blunt your ability to fall and stay in love," said Helen Fisher, a Rutgers University biological anthropologist who has pioneered the modern science of love.

For some people, of course, sexual side effects are an acceptable price to pay for curing debilitating depression. But as antidepressant use becomes more common, extending beyond full-blown clinical depression to disorders like anxiety and, in some cases, insomnia, the possibility of love-stunting is troubling.

SSRI antidepressants work by boosting circulating levels of serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter that also inhibits desire. The drugs also decrease dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in a wide range of cognitive and behavioral processes, among them desire and arousal. The new research suggests that dopamine may also play a part in romance.

During sex, a cocktail of hormones is released that appears to play important roles in fostering romantic attachment within the brain. Take away sex, and romantic love can dwindle. But this is just part of the problem, say Fisher and University of Virginia psychiatrist James Thomson.

Dopamine also appears central to the neurobiology of romantic love and attachment, conditions that Fisher believes to be affected by — but ultimately distinct from — sexual love and its effects. She and Thomson say that SSRIs may do more than cause sexual dysfunction: They also suppress romance.

"There are all sorts of unconscious systems in our brain that we use to negotiate romantic love and romantic attraction," said Thomson. "If these drugs cause conscious sexual side effects, we'd argue that there are going to be side effects that are not conscious."

According to Fisher, humans have three distinct but interconnected love-related brain systems: one for sex, another for attachment and another for romantic love. This is still hypothetical — nobody knows exactly what love does in the brain — but Fisher has been a pioneering researcher on romantic love's neurobiology, and dopamine indeed appears important.

When couples have just fallen in love, the mere sight of the other causes a jump in dopamine-related brain activity. If they manage to stay in love, with the early flush giving way to long-term affection, those brain patterns stay active.

Reduced dopamine levels, however, are an inevitable effect of SSRIs. Reduce dopamine, say Fisher and Thomson, and the possibility of love itself is reduced.

Though biologically plausible, definitive evidence for this has yet to be found. The only study to specifically test the hypothesis was conducted by Saint Mary's University psychologist Maryanne Fisher, who found that women taking antidepressants tended to have muted reactions when showed pictures of attractive men. The effect was small, however, and the study has not been reproduced.

University of California at Los Angeles psychiatrist Andrew Leuchter acknowledged that increasing serotonin can decrease dopamine, but has not seen difficulties in forming emotional attachments among his patients. "I've seen people who have great difficulty with their emotional attachments, who think they've fallen out of love or want to isolate themselves, come alive again," said Leuchter, who receives funding from antidepressant drugmakers. "I'm not sure the syndrome [Fisher and Thomson] describe exists."

Thomson and Fisher, on the other hand, report the opposite: antidepressant takers who've lost the capacity for romantic feeling.

Clinical studies of antidepressant side effects do little to settle this debate. They've focused on sexual problems, which are far easier to measure than subtle effects on something so ephemeral as a spark.

Thomson recommended that psychologists investigating romance ask test subjects whether they take antidepressants. He also suggests that the possibility of romantic stunting be considered when deciding whether antidepressants should be prescribed to a child or young adult.

"Does it impact the development of those areas of the brain involved in love and sexuality? Does it impair the feelings and behaviors of romantic love and sexuality and the learning processes, which might be required to bring those areas of the brain online?" said Thomson. "We don't know."

Said Fisher, "We want to know about the side effects of other drugs. Why not know about the side effects of these drugs, which affect our reproductive future?"

Another alternative could be drugs that don't boost serotonin. Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin, increases levels of dopamine and norepinephrine, another neurotransmitter; it's been associated with far lower levels of sexual dysfunction, but doesn't work for everyone.

Drug companies are currently designing next-generation antidepressants that raise dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine levels simultaneously, and might have fewer romantic side effects. However, none of these drugs are yet on the market, and projected side effects remain hypothetical.

"Any drug in development is always better than anything out there," said Leuchter. "And then, once they hit the market, nothing is perfect."

I am so frustrated and pissed off lately. I have so much shit to get done, and then crap I would like to do. Between the major things of working with my lawyer, helping type up bids for my mom's work, the rp comm restructure, and my pc being an ass, it's becoming too much.

I still don't have the con photos up.. I haven't had a chance, and when I have, I was not functional enough to do it and went to sleep. I'd love to RP, but I lost my will to write tags for various reasons I will refrain from making public.

Things have just grated me so much, especially in the last two days, that Michelle spent some time just hugging me and caressing my scalp to try and keep me from eradicating planets. It still didn't stop me from deleting a bunch of unfinished logs out of emo rage late tonight.

Today I had to do yet another full install on my pc! I still don't know if it solved the initial problem that eventually resulted in the action. While working on the new banner for OA, photoshop decided it wouldn't render thumbnails in layers and menus properly anymore. Why? Who the hell knows! Nothing changed on the pc when it started, and nothing was fixing it! Ran a repair on PS, nothing. Reinstalled graphics drivers, nothing. blah blah blah.. so finally I did a system restore and then I wanted to cry as now more programs didn't work cuz of the file changes! (Windows, you lying bastard, restore wasn't supposed to affect that!) Undo restore, and PS stalls in an error on loading, and uninstalling.. and.. yeah.

The bright side today? Migs helped me with the banner and some comm stuff got sorted out after I dragged people through the dirt to get their feedback and explanation of their previously proposed ideas. Oh, and of the tags I did get to write, I did get one tag back. Then again, if Michelle did blow me off, she doesn't have many places to hide in my own house.

There aren't very many people or things in my daily life that I'm not at least mildly upset with, causing me to emo hard, or enraged by right now.

But the banner looks fantastic.

Katsucon 15 Update

I had an awesome time at Katsucon last weekend! uchiha_naruto and I drove down on Thursday to meet up with scribblesitm at her house, then that night the three of us went to the hotel to check in and get our badges. It was a good thing we did because the pre-reg line on Friday was LONG and we got to skip it. I wish I kept my camera on me Thursday evening because I saw the most amazing TYL!Lambo and TYL!Reborn from KHR in the elevator. I never did find them the rest of the weekend to get a shot! On our way to the hotel, we stopped at Benihana Hibachi Grill for some entertaining dinner.

I think on Friday I might have seen oceanica and her friend that was going with her, but I'm not sure. If I did, their costumes were amazing also! I feel bad if it was them and I didn't say hi, but I had already walked away with my group when it clicked why Chouji looked familiar. I didn't get a chance to run into them again the rest of the weekend either.

On Friday afternoon the three of us caught up with chyna_rose23 at a Naruto photoshoot. It was totally by chance that I noticed her LJ name on her badge! It was really awesome getting to meet her, and she is a lot more talkative in person than online. We also got to meet her friend Aaron, who was done up as an amazing Kurenai. He was hilarious and a lot of fun! Friday night we went to Chilies for dinner and one of the few people who came up to us asking what was going on (we went in cosplay) gave uchiha_naruto a special Pentigon issue Obama coin to take back to Scotland!

Saturday was a blast hanging out with our group. We got to know this girl who was playing an adorable child!Gaara who let us huddle under her blanket at the outdoor photoshoot and another girl who went as Temari and Haku. Both had awesome cosplays! I wish I were good with names, because I don't remember them. >.< Saturday evening brought the lulz, as scribblesitm, uchiha_naruto, and I went to the Valentine's Ball in formal wear versions of our cosplays. uchiha_naruto and I learned how to ballroom dance! (They made me the lead though!)

Sunday was a chill day, except for lugging our suitcases down from the 9th floor via the stairwell. The real shitty part of the experience was the elevators. They were so not set up for the enmasse of people there for the con. You had to practically pencil in 30 min of elevator time if you planned to be somewhere.

I took many pictures over the weekend, which I will get up asap.

Yesterday I had to drive my car which required digging it out of a foot of snow.. always fun. Especially since I don't own boots. XD At least, not snow boots.. just club boots. It took a good hour to dig it out and clean it off, then scrape the ice off the windows and lights. Also in our state, you have to clear the snow off the ENTIRE car so that none of it will fly off your car otherwise you can get a fine for it. D; I was covered in snow by the time I moved the car further up the driveway to keep cleaning it off.

1. What were you into before getting into Naruto?
- FFXI primarily, as for anime-- Yami no Matsuei
2. Aside LJ/AIM RP, what other types of RPs you like?
- Tabletop RP, such as Dungeons and Dragons.. which is still my preferred RP format.
3. Did you have a favorite character before Sasuke?
- Kakashi > Orochimaru > Itachi / Orochimaru > Itachi / Tayuya / Orochimaru > Itachi / Sasuke / Orochimaru > Itachi / Kimimaro / Sasuke... so yeah, and actually Itachi is my favorite character! I just am more accustomed to Sasuke due to my muse.
4. Who or what got you into Uchihacest?
- SasuSasu aside, it was Michelle's Itachi that actually opened the door to Uchihacest. I wasn't a fan of it prior outside of SasuSasu, and neither was Michelle. The whole relationship between our characters was not something planned.. it just happened over time!
5. Do you want Sasuke redeemed by the end of the manga, or would you rather he died along with Madara?
- That's a tough one. While it would be epic to see him die with Madara, I think the soft side of me would rather see him redeemed. It'd be interesting to me either way!

1) If you had to pick between a RL Sasuke and/or Itachi or world peace what would you go for?
- hahaha.. mmm Uchiha... they can help protect me in the ensuing war! \o/
2) If you could become any person (fictional or real) who would you choose? (and *no* Uchihas are not an option lol)
- Drizzt do'Urden. Since you like LoTR, you might like reading the Forgotten Realms books, btw. It was being a fan of them that got me into LoTR.. lol!

3) What would you say is the best part about being my stalker/friend/SO? :P
- Having common interests, it's such a rare thing for me! Also I love your passion for your fandom. XD
4) When Naruto ends would you feel sad if your friends you met through the fandom drifted away or would you look towards getting new ones in another fandom?
- I'd feel sad, although I don't see why they should drift away either.
5) What 3 items would you take if you were stranded on a crappy island with no electricity?
- Mmm.. a solar panel operated generator, my computer, and my Naruto box! ;D ;D

- Death, really. It's why I fear everything else I fear.

- Myself. While others make me happy, I tend to rely on myself most for my own happiness.

- A really good and fun DnD group.... although, I can have both. xD
5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
- At home. lol. I've given up on having major long term goals. ^^;;
